Second Story Builders – Circular Construction Coordinator, Long House POSTED 4/2/2026
Job Title: Circular Construction Coordinator
Location: Rockland ME
Flexible schedule: Full-Time or Part-Time, seasonal or year-round Compensation: $30-$42/hr based on experience
Available: Immediately, until filled
About Second Story Builders
Second Story Builders is a mission-driven business advancing circular construction practices in Midcoast Maine. Our work spans deconstruction, reclaimed material sales, and design+build projects that prioritize salvaged materials.
How We Work
Rather than treating deconstruction and construction as separate activities, we approach them as parts of a continuous cycle. Materials are recovered, reintroduced, and adapted for new use – often requiring flexibility in sequencing, detailing, and decision-making. This way of working creates a different kind of job site. It involves irregular materials, evolving conditions, and a team made up of individuals with varying levels of experience.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for someone who can operate as a design+build educator, overseeing a reuse oriented construction project. The right candidate has ample construction experience, including but not limited to leading on-site residential construction projects. This should be paired with experience or interest in working with and directing individuals with varying skill levels on a jobsite. The right candidate can balance the necessary time constraints of a construction project with managing opportunities for teaching and learning for new tradespersons. We’re looking for someone who can operate effectively within this type of environment – someone who is comfortable building, problem-solving in real time, and helping guide others through the process.
Key Responsibilities
* Oversee and/or coordinate day-to-day construction activities
* Manage workflow, sequencing, and use of reclaimed materials
* Perform hands-on carpentry and building tasks
* Provide direction and support to interns and team members
* Maintain a safe, organized, and productive job site
* Adapt construction approaches as conditions and materials evolve
* Collaborate on problem-solving and project decision-making
Qualifications
*Carpentry experience (residential construction preferred)
*Experience managing a job site or leading a small team
*Ability to provide clear direction and maintain workflow on site
*Comfort working hands-on while also overseeing others
*Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt in real time
* At least one of the following:
-Experience teaching or mentoring
-Familiarity with reclaimed materials or deconstruction
-Interest in sustainable building and workforce development
About the Long House Project
The Long House is an experimental housing project that prioritizes the use of reclaimed materials in new construction. It is a two-story shared residence with an adjacent workshop (renovated garage), supporting both living and making in one place. The project will provide reasonably priced co-living space for young people entering the trades – particularly those who grew up in Midcoast Maine and are looking to remain in the area but face limited access to affordable, quality housing. The project will also serve as an active job site for Second Story’s summer internship program, bringing students and emerging builders into the construction process.
To Apply
Please send a brief introduction describing your background and interest in the project to danny@secondstorybuilders.com. We’re particularly interested in how you think about building, materials, and working with others. We are intentional about hiring underrepresented tradespersons.

Program details
Running from April 8 through November, the Pre-Apprenticeship Program combines flexible learning and real-world exposure to passive house design and construction.
Each month, students will participate in:
One in-person training session or repeat virtual session to accommodate different schedules. The first session is three hours, while later sessions run about two hours. In-person sessions happen Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30p, while virtual sessions will happen Wednesdays between 12 and 1p.
Monthly job shadowing opportunities with phME partner firms, providing an inside look at passive house projects—whether at a firm’s office or an active job site. While primarily observational, these experiences will give students a first-hand understanding of the daily work involved in sustainable building. Floating job shadowing events will be announced in advance.
Access to an available stipend to help support student participation.
By the end of the program, certified pre-apprentices will have built valuable connections with industry professionals, making this an excellent stepping stone toward future apprenticeships, internships, and job opportunities in the growing field of high-performance building.
